“Research into the history of Turkish civilisation dates almost without exception from the 20th century. The majority of earlier European researchers in this field asserted that the Turks had no civilisation of their own, the widespread assumption being that Ottoman civilisation was raised on Byzantine foundations. The fact that over the centuries millions of Turks had migrated westwards was ignored, in favour of misleading claims to the effect that the Ottoman state was founded by a handful of warlike nomads. But in the 20th century this attitude changed radically as a result of studies by historians, Fuad Köprülü being the first to devote himself to correcting this erroneous view of Turkish history. Thanks to their work it was demonstrated that the Turks who migrated to Anatolia were not merely a horde of simple shepherds and warriors, but a people with their own civilisation who were enabled to develop it under the conducive conditions of Anatolia.” Toktamış Ateş
