Although Monsieur Dumas in the Expanatory note appended to these volumes, cites contemporary authority for the final catastrophe as having actually taken place, we are not, of course, to assume that any other portion of Nannier's career, as traced in this story, is founded upon fact.

Monsieur de Richelieu had given his word to the king, and did not propose to break it. He went therefore the next day to call upon Monsieur le Cardinal de Fleury, in the capacity of an ambassador returning from his mission. Monsieur le Cardinal de Fleury, ex-bishop of Frejus, deserves a few descriptive strokes of our pen, if for no other purpose than to enable the reader to understand the part which he is to play in this narrative. He was, at the date in question, a scheming, blas, old churchman, as Beaumarchais called him later; an aged man, with a young mans passion for intrigue, a mind fertile in paltry schemes, which he had studied up at his leisure during the reign of Louis XIV. under cover of the skirts of Pre La Chaise and Madame de Maintenon. He knew the court thoroughly, and he was sure of the king; several attempts which had been made to oust liim had turned to the confusion of his enemies, and yet he had not appeared to exult in his triumph in the least.
