The book written by Dr. Fikret Yılmaz was prepared for publication from the dusty pages of history by “Bahçeşehir University Gallipoli 100th Year Researches Center”, and provides readers with the opportunity to closely witness how war affects a family, their lives and those outside the front through the correspondences between Captain Kenan, one of permanent defenders of Gallipoli and Dardanelles between 1912-1915 and his wife and other relatives. The book was published from Bahçeşehir University Publications, and tries to trace the war front, its reflections to hors de combat and feelings of people, based on 94 letters written between Captain Yusuf Kenan, his wife Zehra and their close relatives.

WHO IS YUSUF KENAN?

Captain Yusuf Kenan, martyrized during the First World War, spent the last three years of his life with his duties on defending Gallipoli Peninsula and Dardanelles. But his last battle was not his first assignment in Gallipoli front. For the first time he defended Dardanelles in Turco-Italian war (1911-1912). For the second time he took charge in Gallipoli in Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and for the third time he fought among the soldiers who defended Gallipoli Peninsula in the First World War until he died. In Turco-Italin war he took place in Kumkale and Ezine in Anatolian side. In Balkan Wars he was appointed in Maydos (Eceabat), Bolayır and Anafartalar for 11 months. He was sent back to Gallipoli in the First World War in 1914 September and on 25 April 1915 when Gallipoli Land Wars started he martyrized while fighting against the forces landed in İkiz Bay. When he martyrized he was 34 years old and left his 27 years old wife Zehra and 3 years and six months old two children behind. His family found out his death 15 days later. “Gallipoli Letters 1912-1915, My Soul, My Dear Husband” telling the pains of war as well as the great love of Captain Yusuf Kenan and his wife through the letters written 100 years ago from now is the first publication of Bahçeşehir University Gallipoli 100th Year Research Center.
